Want to Lose Weight? Reward Yourself
If you want to maintain weight loss success, and lets face it losing 10 pounds only to gain 15 does not feel like success, you must find some way to reward and comfort yourself without using food.
Think of it like breaking a bad habit. If you are trying to break a bad habit you need to replace that habit with something else. If you don't the habit will creep back in.
Take out a pen and paper or use your computer and brainstorm for possible rewards. What is it that feels great to you (besides eating)? What makes you smile? What do you enjoy? Next time you start to feel like you want a treat, make the connection in your mind and jump from your usual choice of sweet or salty treats to your new non-food choice of reward. It could be a massage, a movie, a bubble bath, or whatever feels great to you. Over time you will form new pathways in your brain and when you think of rewards you will think of your non-food rewards. You will in a sense have reprogrammed your brain.
Also choose something from your list of rewards to celebrate your small successes along the way. Be creative and reward yourself frequently. This will help you stay motivated.
Remember, if you do slip and choose food for comfort or reward, to do so consciously. Be mindful. Savor, enjoy and release it, rather than feeling guilty and beating yourself up. Do it without giving up on yourself and your resolve.
